We know how important libraries are in building communities. When Boone County needed a larger, more visible southern branch of its public library, we knew we could design an accessible structure allowing all patrons to experience something unique and fulfilling. But we were also charged with embedding the library's messaging into the design: that they are forward-looking; they are bold and engaging; they are an oasis in a busy world; they are welcoming to the entire community, and aware of their impact on the world. We led a collaborative design process that included Boone County Public Library (BCPL) representatives and community members.

Our design approach divided the building into four distinct spaces: two solid and two transparent. The solid spaces offer privacy for functions such as the branch workroom, family activity center, innovation lab (maker space), conference room, multipurpose room, restrooms, and mechanical rooms. The transparent spaces house open and welcoming functions such as collections, an internet cafe, computer stations, a centralized youth play area, preschool features, display areas, reading nooks, and lounge areas.
Upon entry, visitors are greeted at the convergence of the two major areas, which provide clear pathways to distinct areas within the library. This spatial arrangement ensures cohesion and accessibility throughout the facility. Natural light brings the outside in, providing a welcoming oasis for patrons to experience. We carefully selected finishes, materials, and textures that emphasize user comfort and show off the library’s collection. Vibrant accent colors aid in wayfinding, while warm wood elements enhance spaces designated for relaxation.
From the outside, the building exudes a playful aesthetic with bright vertical fiber cement panels and tall window openings. The central transparent spaces maximize daylight and energy performance with a full-height curtainwall featuring high-performance glazing. The transparency offers clear views of the activities within, encouraging participation in the library community.
