Morehead, Kentucky
The Cancer Treatment Center for St. Claire Medical Center is a separate building located in the residential area behind the St. Claire Hospital and provides outpatient treatment to patients within a 50 mile radius of Morehead, Kentucky. Design criteria for the center emphasized the need to provide a warm and “home” feeling. It was also important to have a “residential” scale for the facility to blend with the surrounding neighborhood. The pitched roof and brick exterior walls were specifically chosen for this reason.
The building contains an Ovarian Clinic 6/100 radiotherapy linear accelerator. A special room, with three foot thick concrete walls, was designed to shield the radiation emitted by the equipment and to accommodate the complex requirements such as Gammex Laser Light Positioning, Computerized Serial Interface Electronics, and Remote Video Monitoring. Support areas include RAD II Computerized Simulator, Control, Dark Room, Laboratory, Mold Shop, Nurses Station, Exam Rooms, Treatment, and Office space. Special care has gone into the design of the Reception, Family Counseling, Waiting, and Treatment areas. Indirect lighting, warm colors, exposed wood trusses, and wainscotting incorporating native woods from Rowan County assist in providing a tranquil and comfortable atmosphere for patients and visitors at the Center.
