Omni Architects Leads Discussion on High-Performance Building Envelopes at AIA IN/KY Convention

Omni Architects continued to demonstrate its leadership in high-performance building design at the 2025 AIA Kentucky / AIA Indiana Convention in Lexington, where President Eric Zabilka, AIA, presented an engaging and well-attended session titled “Keeping the Water Out: In Pursuit of a Caulk-Free Building.”

Despite its early 8:00 a.m. start, the session drew a strong crowd of architects, contractors, and building science professionals eager to explore one of architecture’s most persistent challenges: achieving durable, watertight envelopes without overreliance on caulk and sealants.

Through case studies, technical analysis, and lessons learned from decades of practice, Zabilka guided attendees through the complex relationship between design intent, installation methods, and commissioning processes—highlighting how small detailing decisions can dramatically affect long-term building performance. Participants left with a clearer understanding of how to integrate envelope design strategies that emphasize resilience, maintainability, and measurable performance over quick fixes.

As building envelopes evolve to meet increasingly stringent standards for energy efficiency, durability, and occupant well-being, Omni Architects continues to champion design approaches that reduce weak points and improve the life-cycle performance of buildings.

“Water infiltration remains one of the most common—and preventable—sources of building failure,” said Zabilka. “By designing smarter interfaces and reducing dependency on caulk, we can deliver buildings that perform better, last longer, and serve their users more effectively.”

Omni’s presentation reflects the firm’s ongoing commitment to advancing the profession through research-informed practice, peer engagement, and continuous learning—core tenets that define its approach to architectural excellence.
